Birthstones and Their Meanings

There are some gifts that just never go wrong. When shopping for a special someone, for a child, or even for yourself, a birthstone is never a bad choice. Not only are they beautiful, but they have a deeper meaning. Here are the twelve birthstones and a little about what makes them unique...

January is the month of the Gamet. This is a beautiful stone comprised of every spectrum of color aside from blue. It is knows to be the "gem of faith".

February as for the Amethyst. A direct translation of "amethustos" means "not drunk". This purple tinted gemstone is made famous by the ancient Greeks as they believe it would protect those from the effects of wine if worn.

March's gemstone is Aquamarine. It is a glorious blue color as the Latin meaning of the word aquamarine is "seawater". This gemstone is said to provide courage.

The diamond is for the month of April. Not only is this the hardest substance known to man, but it is one of the most beautiful stone to look at. No wonder its symbol is love.

May is the Emerald. Emeralds are no stranger to royalty as the ancients claimed the stone held powers within it. This stone is unique in the matter that is promises new life as May opens the spring season.

June is the month of the pearl. Old Arab legends say that a pearl is the moment a drop of dew is filled with sunlight from the moon and is dropped into the ocean. Once a clam swallows the drop filled with moonlight, a pearl is formed.

July is for the ruby. This rich rip colored stone stands for wisdom. A stone that is no stranger to royalty.

The Peridot is for the month of August. The actual meaning of the work Peridot is "gem". This stone is mesmerizing to look at as you view its full range of passionate greens and yellows.

September is home of the Sapphire. Persian ancestors believe the sapphire is what gives the sky its color. Kings used to wear this stone to protect them.

October has the Citrine birthstone. This is the symbol of hope. This is exceptionally interesting to view with its array of colors it so elegantly displays.

November is for the Citrine. The golden stone can stand for "fire" or "yellow". This is sister to the Imperial citrine.

And finally, December is for the Blue Topaz. There are many claims made about the power of this particular birthstone. It has been said to dispel enchantment, rid of sadness, and even heal burns and asthma.
