A History of Cocktail Rings

There are different views of people regarding the actual year in which the cocktail ring was first created. Every type of jewelry available today has experienced tremendous variations in its design and style over a period of time. However, there are certain types which have been around for many decades and their popularity never fades out. Cocktail rings fall in this category.

According to some sources, the cocktail ring originated during the 1940s to 1950s, whereas others concede on the decades of 1920s and 1930s as its origin. However a lot of people unanimously agree that this remarkable piece of jewelry was first designed in the American Prohibition era during which time it was thought of as a fashion symbol in illegal parties. These parties were organized in secret clubs known as "speakeasy," where the elite class appeared in fine dresses. To create extra zing to their appearance, women topped their attire mostly with large sized rings which came to be known as cocktail rings.

These were worn on the fourth finger of the right hand mostly, because of which they were also referred to as the right hand rings. However, they look the most appealing if worn on the index or middle finger. They are unique as they are large and mostly have a single big stone as the focal point. These started off as an expensive jewelry item and therefore were typically available in silver, platinum, white and yellow gold. The most common stones adorning them in the initial years were diamonds. They either had huge solitaires or sets of smaller ones embedded in the basic design on the main frame.

Nowadays, owing to the trend towards wearing cocktail rings for not only formal occasions but also on a day to day basis, cheaper modifications have been introduced for maximum affordability. The cheapest of all varieties include those made with nickel or brass and adorned with artificial or glass stones. The synthetic stones are yellow, green, and pink in color to name just a few which is why they can be purchased to go with practically any type of outfit.

Since they were first designed, these jewelry items have been used by women on several occasions. Nowadays, even if you have as little as $20 to spend or as much as millions, you can purchase stunning rings to add glamour and style to your appearance.
